# Agent 3 — starting-pitcher streaming, championship reconstruction, and adversarial review

> **Final-result update (September 27):** Corey’s Double Play won the championship **863.3–701.0**. Sunday added 74.9 for Corey (40.0 batting, 34.9 pitching) and 81.1 for the Gems. The final 16-start championship line was 404.2 points, 25.26 per start, with 15 positive and one negative start. This memo otherwise preserves its pre-Sunday snapshot; `report.md` contains the reconciled final audit.

Research snapshot: **2026-09-27, approximately 12:13 p.m. ET**, before Sunday's games. This is important: the Yahoo championship was **still live**, so a final champion and final score were not yet available.

## Critical status limitation

At capture, Yahoo showed **Corey's Double Play 788.40, Sane Moderate Person's Gems 619.90**, with original projections **805.55–816.36** and live projections **912.85–744.98**. Both teams still showed **18 games remaining** (Corey 95/113 played; opponent 92/110). Therefore:

- The 168.50-point lead and live projections are **exact snapshots**, not final results.
- A post-season “final verdict” that declares the championship won is premature.
- All Sunday acquisitions, late scratches, weather, active/bench choices, and final totals remain **unavailable** until the matchup closes.

## Executive finding

The six-add championship plan was a strong, repeatable piece of roster engineering: every acquired starter was activated, all six scored positively, and the sequence captured **88.9 points** from six starts (**14.82/start; median 15.0**). The plan used the league's exact **6-of-6 weekly adds** and efficiently dropped pitchers only after their starts.

However, the plan is not the main reason the matchup became a blowout. Four pitchers already rostered for Tuesday — Taj Bradley, Drew Rasmussen, Jared Jones, and Michael Soroka — produced **188.5 points** against combined contemporaneous Foundry projections of **77.2**, an extraordinary **+111.3 points above projection**. That early tail outcome created the cushion. The correct narrative is therefore:

> Good process created six extra starts and 88.9 captured points; favorable variance in the pre-existing rotation created the championship-sized margin.

## Exact six-acquisition chain

| Yahoo timestamp | Add | Drop / slot source | Start date | Foundry rank / verdict / projection | Actual Yahoo points | Process | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|---:|---:|---:|---:|
| Sep 21, 9:16 pm | Zebby Matthews | Ryan Johnson | Mon 9/21 | #1, SPEC, 14.3 | 16.6 | A | B+ |
| Sep 22, 7:35 am | Drew Anderson | Zebby Matthews, after start | Tue 9/22 | #11, STREAM, 16.6 | 17.5 | A | B+ |
| Sep 22, 9:14 pm | Connor Prielipp | Christian Scott (IL) | Wed 9/23 | #11, STREAM, 15.7 | 11.2 | A- | B- |
| Sep 23, 5:38 am | Trevor Rogers | Drew Anderson, after start | Fri 9/25 | **Unavailable on archived Foundry Friday board** | 14.5 | B | B |

| **Total / average** | 6 adds | All six weekly adds used | 6 starts | Listed-five projections 77.6; Rogers unavailable | **88.9 / 14.82** | **A-** | **B+** |

Actual stat lines and scoring:

| Pitcher | Site | OUT | H | ER | BB | HBP | K | W | Yahoo points |
|---|---|---:|---:|---:|---:|---:|---:|---:|---:|
| Zebby Matthews | @ SF | 15 | 8 | 5 | 0 | 0 | 9 | 0 | 16.6 |
| Drew Anderson | vs WSH | 18 | 5 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 5 | 0 | 17.5 |
| Connor Prielipp | @ SF | 16 | 4 | 2 | 2 | 0 | 3 | 0 | 11.2 |
| Trevor Rogers | @ NYY | 12 | 5 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 4 | 0 | 14.5 |
| Bryce Miller | vs LAA | 18 | 6 | 5 | 2 | 0 | 7 | 0 | 13.6 |
| Kade Anderson | vs LAA | 10 | 4 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 4 | 0 | 15.5 |

The rows reconcile to the visible league scoring: roughly **OUT +1, H -1.3, ER -3, BB/HBP -1.3, K +3, W +8**. The six adds had **32 K (5.33/start), 0 wins, 1 QS (16.7%), 6/6 positive starts, 0/6 negative starts**, and population standard deviation **2.06 points**. The narrow observed variance is an outcome fact, not evidence the choices were low-risk.

## Championship pitching, all active starters through Saturday

The full active starting-pitcher set, not only acquisitions, was:

| Day | Active SP points captured |
|---|---|
| Mon | Zebby 16.6 |
| Tue | Drew Anderson 17.5; Taj Bradley 33.2; Drew Rasmussen 52.8; Jared Jones 54.7; Michael Soroka 47.8 |
| Wed | Logan Henderson 19.9; Connor Prielipp 11.2 |
| Thu | Tyler Glasnow 36.5 |
| Fri | Gavin Williams -1.7; Cristopher Sanchez 37.2; Bryce Miller 13.6; Trevor Rogers 14.5 |
| Sat | Kade Anderson 15.5 |

**Derived exact metrics through Saturday:**

- Starts: **14**
- SP points: **369.3**
- Points/start: **26.38**
- Median: **18.7**
- Population SD: **16.65**
- Positive-start rate: **13/14 (92.9%)**
- Negative-start rate: **1/14 (7.1%)**
- Quality starts: **7/14 (50.0%)**
- Wins: **5/14 (35.7%)**
- Strikeouts: **95; 6.79/start**
- Home: **6 starts, 175.0 points, 29.17/start**
- Road: **8 starts, 194.3 points, 24.29/start**
- Two-start pitchers: **none among the 14 active starts through Saturday**

The home/road difference is descriptive only. Fourteen starts are too few, and pitcher/opponent quality is confounded with venue.

## Daily Corey scoring and why early points mattered

Yahoo daily active totals reconcile exactly to the 788.40 Saturday-night total:

| Day | Batting | Pitching | Daily total | Cumulative |
|---|---:|---:|---:|---:|
| Mon | 0.0 | 16.6 | 16.6 | 16.6 |
| Tue | 78.6 | 209.4 | 288.0 | 304.6 |
| Wed | 84.7 | 43.1 | 127.8 | 432.4 |
| Thu | 71.1 | 36.5 | 107.6 | 540.0 |
| Fri | 44.2 | 74.6 | 118.8 | 658.8 |
| Sat | 112.4 | 17.2 | 129.6 | **788.4** |

Tuesday's four non-six-plan starters scored 188.5 versus 77.2 projected by Foundry:

| Pitcher | Foundry projection | Actual | Difference |
|---|---:|---:|---:|
| Taj Bradley | 21.3 | 33.2 | +11.9 |
| Drew Rasmussen | 22.3 | 52.8 | +30.5 |
| Jared Jones | 21.6 | 54.7 | +33.1 |
| Michael Soroka | 12.0 | 47.8 | +35.8 |
| **Total** | **77.2** | **188.5** | **+111.3** |

This is the most important variance finding. The early cushion rationally reduced the need to chase weak Sunday starts, but it should not be treated as proof the aggressive strategy will routinely generate 47 points per start.

## Friday six-versus-four volume

The phrase “six versus four” is best read as **the opponent's six actual Friday starts versus Corey's four**. (Roki Sasaki threw one relief inning and is excluded from the start count.)

| Side | Friday actual starters | Starts | SP points | Pts/start | Median | Negative starts |
|---|---|---:|---:|---:|---:|---:|
| Corey | Gavin -1.7; Sanchez 37.2; Bryce 13.6; Rogers 14.5 | 4 | **63.6** | **15.90** | **14.05** | 1/4 |
| Opponent | Eury 56.4; Mize -19.0; Detmers 41.8; Soriano -10.4; Alvarez 7.0; Cameron -8.3 | 6 | **67.5** | **11.25** | **-0.65** | 3/6 |

Despite 50% more starts, the opponent gained only **3.9 SP points**. Including active relievers, Yahoo's Friday pitching totals were **74.6 Corey, 76.5 opponent**, only a **1.9-point opponent edge**.

The opponent's six-start portfolio was extremely volatile (population SD **28.15**): Eury Perez and Reid Detmers produced **98.2**, while the other four combined for **-30.7**. This is the clearest warning against treating “more starts” as automatically better in a format with severe H/ER/BB penalties.

## Opponent cycling reconstruction

Visible championship transactions for Sane Moderate Person's Gems:

| Timestamp | Add | Drop | Captured implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sep 22, 7:17 am | Andre Pallante | Quinn Mathews | Pallante later produced 14.5 in week total |
| Sep 22, 7:17 am | — | Alex Bregman | Cleared hitter/roster space |
| Sep 24, 7:45 am | Matthew Boyd | Chris Sale | Boyd produced 25.9 Thursday, then was cycled |
| Sep 25, 7:24 am | Eury Perez | Tyler Mahle | Eury produced 56.4 Friday |
| Sep 25, 7:25 am | Casey Mize | Matthew Boyd | Mize produced -19.0 Friday |
| Sep 26, 6:46 am | Davis Martin | Andrew Alvarez | Davis produced -6.2 Saturday |
| Sep 26, 6:47 am | — | Eury Perez | Cleared slot after use |
| Sep 27, 8:26 am | Yusei Kikuchi | — | Sunday result unavailable at capture |

What to learn: this manager aggressively converts concluded starts into future volume and does it early in the morning. What not to copy: Eury was a Foundry **PASS** (#15, 13.1) and Davis Martin a **PASS** (#16, 11.4 with a live calf/workload flag). Eury's 56.4 was a magnificent outcome, but not evidence that ignoring a threshold is repeatable.

## Kade Anderson blocking value

Kade was added Thursday at 9:54 p.m., before the opponent could use Saturday's slot on him. Foundry's Saturday board had:

- Kade: #7, **14.8**, engine SPEC; LLM raised to STREAM.
- Davis Martin: #16, **11.4**, PASS, QS 8%, with recent-IL/calf/workload warnings.

If both managers needed one Saturday arm and Kade/Davis were the relevant alternatives, first-mover allocation had a **6.8-point expected matchup swing**: +3.4 to the Kade manager versus -3.4 if the assignments were reversed. This is an estimate based on the two Foundry projections, not a Yahoo probability.

Actual allocation produced Kade **15.5** for Corey and Davis **-6.2** for the opponent: a **+21.7 observed net**. Do not call all 21.7 “blocking skill”; most of the gap is realized pitching variance. The repeatable skill was acting first on the clearly superior risk-adjusted option.

Adversarial caveat: Foundry's LLM asserted Kade would make an intentional “normal-rotation final start,” yet he recorded only **10 outs**. The reason for the short outing is not established in the retrieved sources. The role-confirmation narrative was more confident than the realized workload justified.

## Bryce Miller versus David Peterson versus Brayan Bello

### Contemporaneous case

| Candidate | Foundry engine | Projection | W% | QS% | Key case at the time | Actual Yahoo-equivalent points |
|---|---|---:|---:|---:|---|---:|
| Bryce Miller vs LAA | #11 STREAM; LLM → START | **16.2** | 34% | 17% | PF 83, LAA .678 OPS; prior lat issue/slump remained a flag | **13.6** exact Yahoo |
| David Peterson @ BOS | #19 SPEC; LLM → STREAM | **13.3** | 38% | 20% | Recent 1.65 ERA, xFIP 3.76; but PF 110, night split, 44% hard-hit | **26.5 derived exact** from 5 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K |
| Brayan Bello vs CHC | #25 PASS; LLM → STREAM | **10.8** | 32% | 13% | Confirmed Game 2 starter and hot streak; but CHC .771 OPS, PF 110, 50% HH | **11.5 derived exact** from 4 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K |

The Bryce choice was **process-defensible and probably slightly preferred** by the calibrated engine: +2.9 expected points over Peterson, substantially better park/opponent, and a higher base verdict. Peterson was not a foolish alternative; his LLM review explicitly confirmed a normal Game 2 turn in a storm-forced doubleheader and a cold Boston lineup. The correct grade is **A-/B+ process, C+ outcome**.

Actual hindsight:

- Peterson beat Bryce by **12.9** Yahoo points.
- Bello trailed Bryce by **2.1**.
- Choosing Peterson would have improved the realized score, but this does **not** establish that Peterson was the better decision ex ante.

The strongest criticism is not “you should have known Peterson would throw five scoreless.” It is that the Foundry's visible tier labels and its LLM second opinion conflicted: Bryce was raised STREAM→START, Peterson SPEC→STREAM, and Bello PASS→STREAM. A decision tool should surface the absolute differences and uncertainty, not three upward arrows that make all options sound compelling.

## Foundry validation: what worked and what did not

### Evidence shown by Foundry

Exact live record metrics:

- **106 graded nights, 2,655 starts**
- Prequential/nightly rank accuracy **rho 0.27**
- Edge over xFIP sort **+0.044 rho**
- 80% interval coverage **78%**
- QS Brier **0.23**

Current-engine retrospective backtest:

- 161 slates; rho **0.26**, capture **57%**, coverage **77%**, Brier **0.22**
- vs xFIP sort: **+0.062 [0.044, 0.079]**, decisive
- vs opponent OPS: **+0.255 [0.223, 0.287]**, decisive
- vs K%: **+0.065 [0.051, 0.078]**, decisive
- vs recent points: **-0.016 [-0.032, 0.000]**, level

Interpretation:

- The engine adds real ranking value over **single-factor shortcuts**.
- Rank rho 0.27 is useful but modest; it does not imply precise individual-start forecasting.
- Coverage near 80% is encouraging.
- The retrospective “tonight's engine replayed” backtest is weaker evidence than the 106-night prequential record because model/features were developed during the season. Treat it as supporting, not dispositive.

### Signals with evidence of usefulness

- Blended skill model over xFIP alone: yes, positive prequential and retrospective edge.
- Avoiding opponent OPS alone or K% alone: strongly supported.
- League scoring awareness (K=+3, H/BB penalties): structurally important and correctly reflected in the board.
- Workload/role flags: valuable when current and sourced; Davis Martin's PASS/QS-cap was directionally correct.
- Park and opponent as part of a blend: useful context, but no isolated causal estimate was shown.

### Signals that were persuasive but did not add clear value

Foundry's own engine room retired or benched these after no clear effect:

- Extra home/road trust
- Opponent recent-form weighting
- More/less opponent OPS punishment as a steering overlay
- Opposing-starter ERA / run-support credit
- Extra long-rest rust
- More trust in recent starts (`w_recent_down` timed out; recent-points baseline was statistically level with the engine)
- Extra hard-hit/xwOBAcon weighting (one trial was adverse)
- Opener/bulk outs cap overlay

“Playoff motivation” was not validated as a predictive signal. The Friday Gavin Williams LLM narrative emphasized full workload and Cleveland's playoff rotation, but Gavin scored **-1.7** while the engine itself flagged 53% hard-hit risk. Motivation may improve start certainty; it does not independently prevent hits or runs.

## Recommended Foundry changes

1. **Optimize the actual decision, not full-slate rank.** Add a league-specific “marginal points vs best available alternative” score, roster availability, acquisition cost, future starts sacrificed, and block value.
2. **Put downside on the list view.** Show p10, probability of negative points, probability below replacement, and workload-confidence next to mean projection. A six-start portfolio needs risk aggregation.
3. **Add a portfolio planner.** For remaining weekly adds, calculate expected total, downside probability, and Sunday flexibility. Friday showed why six mediocre starts can barely beat four better starts.
4. **Separate role certainty from performance projection.** One field for “will start / innings cap / pitch limit / opener risk,” another for run-prevention/K projection. Kade's “normal start” claim and 10 outs show why.
5. **Timestamp and source probable-pitcher changes.** Trevor Rogers was absent from the archived Friday board; the tool should retain a change log and say when/why an arm appeared or disappeared.
6. **Weather and doubleheader alerts.** Explicit postponement probability, makeup-date effect, Game 1/Game 2 role, lineup-rest likelihood, and lock deadline. Peterson/Bello were a weather-forced doubleheader decision.
7. **Free-agent-only validation.** Report accuracy and calibration on pitchers actually available in this league, not all 2,655 starts. A model can rank aces well without solving streaming.
8. **Decision-grade validation.** Add MAE, calibration by projection band, negative-start Brier/log loss, top-N capture, and expected-regret versus best available. Spearman rho alone is insufficient.
9. **Do not let prose silently override the model.** Display engine and LLM deltas separately with sourced facts. Multiple Friday arms were upgraded by the LLM, diluting selectivity.
10. **Add an acquisition-lock rule:** use the final add only when (a) start probability >=90%, (b) expected points >= league-specific threshold, and (c) the value exceeds preserving Sunday optionality. The exact 2027 numeric threshold should be fit from the completed transaction/points table, not invented now.
11. **Flag motivational narratives as workload-only unless validated.** “Playoff rotation,” “must win,” and “dead rubber” should alter workload/lineup probabilities, not receive an unsupported performance bonus.
12. **Counterfactual dashboard.** Freeze the contemporaneous board, then show realized results later. This prevents hindsight rewriting of Bryce/Peterson.

## Realistic counterfactuals

### CF1 — Peterson instead of Bryce

- Ex ante: Foundry favored Bryce 16.2 to 13.3 (+2.9), with a much better park/opponent; Peterson's LLM/news review made him a legitimate but riskier alternative.
- Actual: Peterson 26.5 vs Bryce 13.6, so realized team score would be **+12.9**.
- Verdict: better outcome, not clearly better process.

### CF2 — Bello instead of Bryce

- Ex ante: Bello 10.8 PASS, role warning, strong CHC offense; weakest base-engine choice despite LLM upgrade.
- Actual: 11.5 vs Bryce 13.6, so **-2.1**.
- Verdict: worse process and worse outcome.

### CF3 — Leave Kade available / take Davis Martin

- Ex ante: Kade 14.8 vs Davis 11.4, plus Kade denied to an aggressive opponent. Expected allocation swing about **6.8 matchup points** if the two managers otherwise swap those arms.
- Actual: Kade 15.5 vs Davis -6.2; actual net was +21.7, with most of that gap variance.
- Verdict: Kade was clearly better process; blocking was real but should not be valued at the full observed gap.

### CF4 — Save one acquisition for Sunday

- Ex ante benefit: late injury/weather/probable-pitcher optionality and response to opponent's 8:26 a.m. Kikuchi add.
- Ex ante cost: forgo one of the six captured starts, all of which ended positive (minimum 11.2 points).
- Actual through Saturday: saving the add would have reduced captured scoring unless Sunday's replacement exceeded the forgone stream. Sunday result unavailable.
- Verdict: using all six before Sunday was aggressive but defensible once the early cushion existed; whether it was optimal cannot be known until final Sunday outcomes and the contemporaneous Sunday free-agent board are frozen.

### CF5 — Quality threshold instead of maximum volume

- A conservative Friday manager could have skipped low-ranked/role-risk starts. The opponent's six starters produced only 3.9 more SP points than Corey's four because three went negative.
- But the distribution was driven by two huge scores; a threshold cannot guarantee the realized better subset.
- Verdict: use a negative-start probability/expected-value threshold, not a hard start-count target.

## Expected championship-probability impacts

Yahoo did not expose win probabilities; exact changes are **unavailable**. Any numeric percentage would be invented. Defensible directional statements:

- Start of week: Yahoo projected Corey down **10.81 points** (805.55 vs 816.36), so the matchup was near-even with Corey a slight points underdog.
- Six-add plan: listed-five Foundry expectation was **77.6** plus an unavailable Rogers projection. Because these were sequential starts rather than six bench stashes, the plan materially improved expected total.
- Tuesday outperformance (+111.3 versus Foundry for four incumbent starters) was by far the largest positive probability shock.
- Kade first-mover allocation added about **6.8 expected matchup points** versus the swapped Kade/Davis allocation, conditional on both managers taking one arm.
- Bryce over Peterson added **+2.9 Foundry expected points** but lost **12.9 realized points**.
- Friday opponent volume added only **3.9 realized SP points**, far less than a naive two-start advantage would imply.

## What could have broken the strategy

- One or two negative starts in a scoring system with -3 ER and -1.3 H/BB/HBP.
- A probable-pitcher move after the last acquisition, as the Kade/Friday-to-Saturday and Trevor archival gaps illustrate.
- Short workload for prospects/returnees: Connor 16 outs, Zebby 15, Trevor 12, Kade 10.
- Weather or a postponement after roster lock.
- Spending all six adds before Sunday and losing response optionality.
- Dropping a pitcher before a rescheduled start or losing an unexpectedly valuable Sunday turn.
- Opponent claiming Kade first.
- Overweighting “must-win/playoff motivation” while ignoring contact-quality risk.
- A cold offense failing to provide the early cushion; through Saturday, pitching supplied 397.4 of 788.4 points.

## Adversarial review

### Least-certain conclusions

1. **Final championship result:** not known; the matchup was live.
2. **Exact win-probability change:** Yahoo provided projections, not probabilities.
3. **Trevor Rogers ex-ante grade:** he was absent from the archived Foundry Friday list, so his contemporaneous model projection is unavailable.
4. **Whether Kade's short outing reflected a cap, performance, health, or ordinary game management:** unavailable.
5. **Season-long streaming metrics, opponent quality, weather splits, and two-start results:** the data collected here support the championship and Foundry audit, not a complete season-wide active-roster join.
6. **IL tags at transaction time:** Yahoo's log can show current/retroactive status; an IL tag in the captured page does not prove the manager saw it when adding.

### Evidence contradicting the flattering narrative

- The six acquisitions contributed 88.9, but four incumbent Tuesday starters beat projections by 111.3. Luck, not transaction cleverness, created the largest swing.
- The original Yahoo projection favored the opponent 816.36–805.55.
- Corey did not win Friday's pitching volume battle; the opponent edged total pitching 76.5–74.6.
- Bryce was not the best realized alternative; Peterson would have added 12.9.
- Gavin was Foundry's #1 Friday arm and scored -1.7.
- Kade's supposedly normal start lasted 3.1 innings.
- Foundry rank accuracy rho 0.27 is helpful, not highly predictive; individual results remain noisy.

### Apparent mistakes that were reasonable at the time

- Bryce over Peterson: supported by higher model projection, better park, and weaker opponent.
- Connor's modest 11.2: a positive result close enough to a 15.7 projection; not a failed decision.
- Trevor's early add: captured 14.5 despite incomplete Foundry archival evidence.
- Using all six adds: every acquired start scored positively, and sequential cycling was efficient; Sunday optionality was the tradeoff, not an obvious error.
- Opponent's Eury add despite PASS: aggressive volume can be rational in a deficit, though the 56.4 result was far above expectation.

### Apparent successes that were probably luck-heavy

- Four Tuesday incumbents scoring 188.5 versus 77.2 projected.
- All six championship acquisitions scoring positively.
- Eury Perez's 56.4 for the opponent.
- Davis Martin's -6.2 combined with Kade's +15.5 making the block look worth 21.7; expected allocation edge was much smaller.
- Peterson's 26.5 counterfactual should not be used to rewrite the Bryce decision.

### What a highly skilled opponent would criticize

- Overconfidence in prose-based LLM tier upgrades and “motivation” stories.
- No visible portfolio downside metric before committing all six adds.
- Spending the sixth add before the Friday slate fully resolved, reducing Sunday optionality.
- Treating raw start count as strategy without a negative-start threshold.
- Using whole-slate Foundry validation rather than league-available free-agent validation.
- Potential familiarity bias: Bryce had already been rostered for 66 days and was reacquired; a familiar player can feel safer than a statistically similar alternative.

### Recommendations that change under other settings

- If wins/QS are worth more and negative events less, volume thresholds should fall and two-start pitchers gain value.
- If starts or innings are capped, marginal volume may be worthless; rank by points per start/inning.
- If transactions are daily unlimited, block value falls and cycling rises.
- If adds are FAAB/waivers rather than first-come, early Kade blocking requires bid-value analysis.
- In categories, Friday's six-vs-four risk calculus changes completely; one disaster can harm ERA/WHIP more than counting-stat volume helps.
- With fewer bench/IL slots, prospect and returning-injury speculation has a higher opportunity cost.

## Bottom line for the lead report

Grade the championship streaming **A- for process, B+ for realized six-add outcomes**, while assigning the overall championship pitching result a large luck component. The strongest repeatable skills were schedule mapping, quick post-start drops, using all six adds intentionally, acting before the opponent on Kade, and capturing every acquired start. The biggest nonrepeatable event was Tuesday's +111.3 overprojection burst from pitchers already rostered. Do not declare a final title until Yahoo closes Sunday's games.
